Injection of botulinum toxin type A, used to improve the appearance of wrinkles, is the most commonly used aesthetic procedure in the US. This toxin is derived from botulinum bacteria, but in minimal quantities it has therapeutic and aesthetic indications.

It works by blocking the nerve signals that lead to the treated muscle. In the absence of this signal, the botulinum toxin injected muscle becomes unable to contract and the end result is the reduction of the expression wrinkles. Among facial treatments, the glabella complex (the region that includes the area between the eyebrows and the root of the nose) remains the most commonly treated area. Many patients have the entire upper third of the face treated with BTX-A: glabella, periocular area, eyebrow area and forehead.

The main indications of botulinum toxin are:

  1. improving the look of the crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, frowning, the marionette lines, smoker’s lines around the lips around the lips (lips are never directly injected with botulinum toxin) and rabbit lines on the nose.
  2. improving of the neck horizontal bands
  3. improving the appearance of the wrinkled skin on the chin
  4. contouring of the mandibular line.
