Breast reduction, known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical intervention which has as purpose the breasts size reduction by eliminating the fat, glandular tissue and skin and alleviating the discomfort associated with overly large breasts. . The fallen aspect will be ameliorated, with the help of repositioning and adjusting the tissue in an aesthetic position on the thorax, and also the areola will become smaller.

There are numerous surgical techniques approached for the breast reduction, but most frequent an incision is made around the areola, after which another one is made horizontally in the submammary groove, this depending on the breasts size. A part of the skin, gland and fat is being removed, aming for breast shaping. Liposuction cannulas can be used to eliminate the fat from the armpit area. In the case of very lowered or very big breasts, the areolas can be completely detached and put in a correct superior position, which will lead to the loss of the sensibility at this level and the incapacity of future breast feeding. But, usually, the areolas remain completely attached to the glandular tissue. Sometimes, only the liposuction can be used if only the fat has to be removed for the breast reduction, this leaving pointy form scars only. The breast reduction operation is made under general anesthesia, overnight admission being necessary. The operation time is 2-4 hours, depending on the complexity, after which the breasts will be bandaged and covered with a special bra.

The resulted scar will always be permanent, although the suture will scar well. It will be present around the areola, descending vertically on the median ax until the submammary groove, from where it can be continued with a horizontal segment. At approximately 6 months after the surgery, little retouches can be done on the skin surface.
