Face lifting

Balance beyond aesthetics

Facelift – Rythidectomy – is a surgical procedure that diminishes the visible signs of face and neck aging, such as wrinkles, deeper laugh lines, under chin fat deposits and submandibular and neck sagging skin.

The facelift addresses the middle and lower floors of the face as well as the neck. The surgery requires 24 hours hospital admission, so the patient will remain hospitalized after the surgery until the next day. The lifting is performed under general anesthesia with an average intervention of 2.5–3.5 hours.

Depending on the surgeon’s preferences, the patient’s facial structure and the desired results, the type of facelift procedure could be different. Remember that every patient is unique.

If we discuss the classic facelift, the incision starts in the region of the temples in the hairline, goes down in front of the ear, and I like to preserve the exact shape of this area, going under its lobe towards the hair line of the back of the head. In this way, all the problems of the middle, lower and sometimes cervical floor of the face are corrected. For the neck surgery, an incision could be necessary under the chin.

You probably heard about the mini facelift. In this case the incision is shorter, going above the ear, in front of it and ending behind the ear. This procedure can be performed in some situations, for example when the reduction of the nasolabial folds and mandibular line need correction and tightening.

The benefits of a facelift surgery:

  • removes fat and excess skin;
  • improves the relaxation of the skin of the face that causes sagging;
  • stretches and tightens the subdermal tissue;
  • removes the loose skin and excess fat of the neck that can appear as a double chin or “turkey neck”;
  • removes the “jowls” developing in the cheeks and jaw;
  • provides a radical improvement in the appearance of the face.

The facelift surgery cannot solve:

  • as a restorative surgery, a facelift does not change your fundamental appearance and cannot stop the aging process.
  • a facelift can only be performed surgically; minimally invasive rejuvenation treatments cannot achieve the same results but may help delay the time at which a facelift becomes appropriate and complement the results of surgery.
  • the droopy appearance of the eyelids and eyebrows does not improve with a facelift but may require a blepharoplasty or brow lift surgery.

Who is a perfect candidate for facelift surgery?

  • physically healthy patients who do not have any disease or medical condition that will hinder their healing;
  • non-smokers;
  • optimistic patients with a positive outlook and realistic expectations.

What are the steps in the facelift intervention?

A face lift includes the following steps:

The results you should expect after a facelift:

After the surgical intervention, the patient presents with edema, bruising and a feeling of tension in the face. These conditions will disappear over time, a few days to a few weeks after the surgery. The scars will have a pink color at first but become barely noticeable over time. The results of the facelift will last for about 10-15 years, after which the surgery will need to be repeated if you want to maintain your youthful appearance, as the skin continues its aging process.

New techniques that include liposuction of certain anatomical regions, a special “fibrin glue” to fix the neck flap, lowering the temperature of the face and neck 24 hours after the surgery can be discussed and applied accordingly.
