Vaginoplasty

Balance beyond aesthetics

Vaginoplasty is the surgical intervention that restores the firmness of the vagina by repositioning excess muscles and skin, to give a more aesthetic appearance and to improve sexual function.

What is a vaginoplasty?

A vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure that restores the firmness of the vagina.

Reasons for a patient to need a vaginoplasty:

After giving birth, women may experience problems with vaginal laxity, resulting from tissue stretching and muscle separation, and this lack of tone can contribute to sexual dysfunction, as well as digestive and urinary problems.

What does a vaginoplasty could offer?

A vaginoplasty repositions and tightens the muscles and it removes the excess skin at the back wall of the vagina. The outer skin can also be removed for a more aesthetic appearance.

Anesthesia for vaginoplasty

The vaginoplasty intervention can be done most of the time under local anesthesia, but many patients choose to do it with general anesthesia. This aspect will be discussed with the plastic surgeon during the preoperative consultation, and she will decide which is your best option.

Preparing for a vaginoplasty

Before surgery, patients are asked to carry out a series of blood tests and gynecological tests.

Who is a perfect candidate for a vaginoplasty?

  • You are physically healthy;
  • Have realistic expectations;
  • You are a non-smoker or decide to quit smoking in the pre- and post-operative period (we encourage stop smoking and a healthy lifestyle);
  • After giving birth, you started having some sexual problems, or you noticed digestive and urinary problems with no direct cause.

What should you expect during a vaginoplasty consultation?

During the consultation, you should be prepared to discuss the following issues:
  • Your expectations;
  • Medication, allergies and treatments;
  • Current use of vitamins, supplements, alcohol;
  • Whether or not you are a smoker;
  • Medical history (surgeries, births, other interventions).

During the consultation, the doctor will:

  • ask you anout your health status;
  • take photos;
  • decide and describe the options you have;
  • recommend a treatment or its interruption, where appropriate;
  • will discuss all the complications that may occur and present you all the risks.

It is very important to understand all the aspects of the vaginoplasty procedure before doing it. It’s normal to feel anxiety, whether this is related to how the result after surgery will be or a little pre-op stress. Don’t be afraid to discuss these feelings with Dr. Nico Ferariu.

The Vaginoplasty procedure

Once the level of tightening that should be performed is determined, the area is marked to delimitate the excess of skin to be removed from inside of the vagina. Under the skin, the tissues ( muscles) are tightened with strong sutures. Once the vaginal canal has been tightened, the skin is closed with suture in a manner that the posterior wall of the vagina remains smooth and firm. If there will be excess skin outside the vagina, it will be removed for a more aesthetic result.

What are the risks of a vaginoplasty?

Like any other surgical intervention, a vaginoplasty is exposed to certain risks such as:

  • infection,
  • bleeding,
  • hematoma
  • seroma, and so on

The recovery after a vaginoplasty

The recovery time varies, but usually recovery takes between 1-2 weeks. Patients may feel a slight pain in the first days (the surgeon will recommend a postoperative treatment). The first 24 hours there will be special dresings.

It is prohibited to use internal tampons and have vaginal sexual contact for 8 weeks. Depending on the level of tightening performed, some patients may be instructed to use dilators.

What are the results of a vaginoplasty?

This procedure normally results in a tight vaginal canal, which can help increase sexual life, make you feel younger and more confident.

*Results may vary depending on the personal characteristics of the patients. We address people over the age of 18.
